John Beech - Paper Variable 2011
John Beech
Rubber Mat Edition Print, 2011
Inked embossing on multi-laminated linen pulp on cotton base sheet
24 x 17 3/4 inches
Dieu Donné is pleased to announce a new edition by John Beech of 20 variable artworks in handmade paper as part of the 2011 Paper Variables program.
Working in the wet studio with Artistic Director Paul Wong, John Beech created a “printing plate” from rubber car mats. Sheets of handmade paper were formed from a thin layer of linen atop a layer of thicker cotton. The plates were then inked and “printed” during the papermaking process leaving an embossing effect on the wet pulp. The resulting work incorporates Beech’s formally abstract aesthetic and elevated use of everyday ephemera into the hand papermaking process to create an intriguing edition reflective of his sculptural work and reminiscent of a Russian Suprematist canvas.
